Why is STEM important?

The development of deep knowledge of STEM-related concepts and the skills required to engage in STEM-related activity are essential for school-aged learners.

These learners will become the future custodians of our planet; they will influence society and they will create futures for their own children. Learning in STEM may underpin their future contributions to research and innovation, to their employment in STEM-related industries, or their informed participation in decision making that affects society. These learners need opportunities to participate in authentic and relevant activities that develop their knowledge and skills in STEM. Through such activities, these learners will also develop their abilities to communicate and collaborate with one another, to think creatively and critically, and to manage their time and resources. Thus, learning in STEM is inextricably linked to the development of the skills needed for active participation in the 21st century.
